DANIEL E. BROWN, hardware merchant, Eau Claire, came to Wisconsin in 1844 with his parents, locating in Grant County. In 1849, went to St. Louis, and came from there to Eau Claire in October, 1866. He was engaged in hardware and stove business for the Eau Claire Lumber Company for twelve years. Since April, 1878, he has been engaged in business for himself. He was born in Middletown, Middlesex Co., Conn., Nov. 19, 1832. He was married in St. Louis, Mo., to his first wife, Mary E. Tiernan, who died in that city in 1860, leaving one daughter, Abbie E., now Mrs. Albert F. Flint, of St. Louis. He was married in St. Louis, July 8, 1865, to his present wife, Jennie E. Lee, a native of North Carolina. They have four children — Lulu E., Elbert L., Jessie L. and Joseph Thorp. Their daughter, Mabel, died in March, 1881, aged four years. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are members of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brown is a member of the Temple of Honor. He served forty days in Co. B, l0th Mo. State Militia; was in active service during that time, following up Price in his raids. He was a member of the militia all the time, and, although frequently on duty in the city, that was the only time he was in the field.
