LEVI M. VILAS, Eau Claire, was born in Chelsea, Orange Co., Vt. Feb. 17, 1844 and lived there until 1851, when his parents came to Madison. He was educated at Wisconsin University, graduating from that institution in 1863, and from Albany Law School in 1864. He was admitted to the Bar at Albany in May. 1864, and to practice in the Supreme Court of Wisconsin in the same year. He commenced the practice of his profession with his brother, Col. W. F. Vilas, in Madison, and was clerk in the Quartermaster's Department from 1865 to 1867; in practice with Col. Vilas again from 1867 to 1868. In the latter year he came to Eau Claire. He was City Attorney by appointment, the first year after his arrival in Eau Claire; he was elected Mayor in 1876, and has been District Attorney since Jan. 1, 1878. He was married in Eau Claire, Aug. 25, 1869, to Ella C. Slingluff, a native of Pennsylvania, who died Aug. 29, 1879, leaving three children — Jessie C., Elizabeth D., and Katie P.
