William Austin “Bill” Lowe, 73, of Canon City, CO, passed away peacefully at home on Thanksgiving morning, November 27, 2008.

Bill was born in Eau Claire on January 8, 1935, to William and Dorothy (Dorris) Lowe. He graduated from Regis High School in Eau Claire in 1953, having lettered in three sports. He was inducted into the Regis Hall of fame in 1987. Lowe obtained his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was varsity starting halfback. He achieved the UPI’s Press Back of the Week award for his interception of a pass thrown by Purdue University’s Lenny Dawson and running 98 yards for a touchdown. This record was just recently broken. Lowe coached football and wrestling at Thorp and Beaver Dam high schools. Bill and Janet (Burton) were well-known Arabian horse breeders, producing national champions, and had many exotic animals at their farm in Beaver Dam. The family moved to the mountains of Colorado, where they continued to raise their family and horses.

Lowe is survived by his wife, Becky (Wilcox); their children: Jilan and Corbett Lowe of Canon City; stepchildren: Sarah Kieny and Ethan Hemming of Denver; his former wife, Janet Burton Searle of Pearze, AZ; their children: Michael Lowe of Montrose, CO, Daniel (Sandra) Lowe of Salida, CO, David Lowe (Mateo Figueroa) of Phoenix, Wendy (Mike) Manuel of Colorado Springs, CO, Stacy Lowe (Matt Brown) of Salida, CO, and Mark (Angie) Lowe of Cortez, CO; 11 grandchildren; his mother, Dorothy Lowe Goethel of Tempe, AZ; his brother, Arthur Lowe of Palm Desert, CA; and sister, Ann Goethel of Scottsdale, AZ.

He is preceded in death by his father, William Lowe; and stepfather, William Goethel.

Arrangements are with Charles Anthony Funeral Home, 225 E. Main Street Florence, CO 81226 (719-784-0832).

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at St. Michaels in Canon City, CO.
