Lyon, Marion (30 May 1918 - 30 Dec. 2007)

Marion Lyon, age 88, of Hayward, died on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at the Valley Health Care Center of Hayward.

Marion Laura was born on May 30, 1918 at Chippewa Falls, the daughter of James Arthur and Laura Isabelle (Shaw) Gary. At the age of three, Marion moved with her family to Arnold, Wis. where her dad worked for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Marion attended the Arnold State Grade School and later Hannibal High School. During the depression, Marion worked as a mother's helper in Chippewa Falls and attended night classes at the Vocational School.

In 1939, Marion was united in marriage to George W. Lyon at the Presbyterian Manse in Cornell, Wis. In April 1940, Marion and George moved to Bayfield, where Marion worked as Agency Manager at the Wisconsin Bell Telephone Company. In 1951, they moved to Hayward where Marion was employed as a telephone operator and service representative for General Telephone Company, a position she held for 18 years. After the switchboard went to the dial system in 1967, Marion was employed at the Moose Cafe for eight years and later the Northern Lakes Co-operative Restaurant and the Ron Di Voo Supper Club as a waitress. She retired on May 30, 1978. Marion was a life member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary to American Legion Post #218. Since 1970, she was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post #7233.

Marion is survived by her twin sister Margaret Gary of St. Paul, Minn.; her sister Catherine Reith of Wauwatosa; her brother George E. Gary of St. Cloud, Minn., and her sister-in-law Mary Lou Gary of Red Cliff.

She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Mary Ellen (Ken) Defoe, Kathleen Gary, Bette Bonney, Lora (Mark) Bresette, Tom (Debbie) Gary, all of Red Cliff; Patricia (Don) Jeffords of Bayfield; Margaret A. (Scott Schwandt) Gary of Madison; Richard E. Gary of Phoenix, Ariz.; John Gary of Washburn; Susan (Nick) Newago, and Diane (Rich) Cooley, both of Ashland; and James F. Gary of Raleigh, N.C.

She is further survived by nephews James E. Blazek of Milwaukee, and Edward L. Blazek of Wadena, Minn.; and many great-great and great-great-great-nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Kay Avery (Ron) Baker, Scott (Kathy) Avery, Lori (Jeff) Miller and Mary Beth Rykal, all of Cornell, Wis.; and Cheryl (Terry) Felmlee of Augusta, Wis.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George in November of 2006, her sister Bessie Blazek, her brother James Gary, and nephews Larry Avery, William Gary, and Tom Bonney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wed., January 3 at the Hayward Wesleyan Church with Pastor Tim Young officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. After a light luncheon at the church, interment will follow around 2 p.m. at the Holcombe Cemetery in Holcombe, Wis.

The Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
