Mockross, Robert H. (16 Feb. 1925 - 24 Aug. 2006)
Robert H. Mockross, age 81, of Mellen, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Mellen Manor in Mellen. Bob was born February 16, 1925 in Chippewa Falls, the son of Harry H. and Florence T. (Tormey) Mockross. He graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood, Mich. in 1943. After graduation he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served from 1943 to 1946 in the 103rd infantry division in the European Theatre, where he received bronze battle stars and the Purple Heart. He also served as a bugler during and after his service to his country in W. W. II. After his honorable discharge from the Army he attended Northland College in Ashland. He then worked as a telegrapher for the Soo Line Railroad, retiring on Feb. 24, 1986. On Feb. 23, 1960 he was united in marriage to Mildred C. Timan at Ironwood, Mich. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Mellen, the Masonic Temple and the American Legion Post 5 of Ironwood. He was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed tying his own flies. He also enjoyed reading at his cabin at Aitkins Lake.
Survivors include his daughter, Doreen (Elden) Davis of Madison; a brother, Carl A. (Joan) of Pine Lake; grandsons, Nathanael Macool of Madison and Pvt. Matthew Mockross currently serving in the U.S. Marines; a nephew, Joel (Diane) Lahti of Green Bay; a niece, Terri Joi (Daniel) Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Ruth (Mickey) Dinsberg of Chicago and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mildred on Sept. 28, 1994 and a sister, Claire Lahti. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Mellen, with Rev. James Imse officiating.
Interment will take place at a later date in the Mellen Union Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the church in Mellen and continue until the hour of service.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home of Ashland and Mellen.
