Hoffstatter, Jack (1931? - 21 OCT 1951)

Jack Hoffstatter, 20-year-old Stanley soldier, home on leave following his father’s death Oct. 10, was found hanging from a rafter at Stanley Sunday night in the same garage in which his father was found asphyxiated earlier this month. The death was pronounce a suicide.

The body of the young serviceman was discovered in the garage by a sister, Mrs. Robert Brandt, and an older brother, DeLoyd, about 7:30 p.m.. They had gone out in search of him after he had left eh house earlier in the evening for a smoke and had not returned.

His brother put him down and applied artificial respiration while Mrs. Brandt went for help. Attempts to revive the youth by his brother and a local doctor failed. Dr. Karl Hatlsberg, county coroner, pronounced him dead on his arrival.

The youth was graduated from Stanley High School with the class of 1950 and had been in the army since June 25 of this year. He had been confined to a hospital at Ft. Riley, Kan. He returned home over a week ago to attend his father’s funeral. It is reported his discharge was pending and that he planned to take over his father’s milk route.

His father, Lloyd Hoffstatter, 49, was found slumped over the steering wheel of his truck about 7 a.m. Oct. 10, by his son James. The truck’s motor was running and the garage door was closed. Coroner Hatlsberg ruled the death accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

The truck was note in the garage when the younger Hoffstatter was discovered. A nearby cable indicated that he may have fastened the rope around his neck, tied it to the rafter, and jumped. His neck was not broken.

Surviving are brothers James and DeLoyd; Mrs. Brandt; another brother, Neil, of Appleton; his mother, and his grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Cochrane, Stanley.
