BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF ANDREW J. BATE.
ANDREW J. BATE, with the Chippewa Lumber & Boom Company, was born in Cambridge, Mass., Feb. 27, 1842; lived in Massachusetts until he came to Madison, Wis., in 1868; remained thereabout six months, then came to Chippewa Falls. He was employed as book-keeper and salesman in mercantile business for about five years; was a member of the police force for three years. Chief of Police a portion of the time.
The Spring of 1880, he has been employed in the office of the Chippewa Lumber & Boom Company. In Apr 1861, he enlisted in Co. 3d Mass. V. I.; served three months in that regiment, and re-enlisted in Co. C, 20th Mass. V. I., and served until December, 1864. After leaving the army, he returned to Massachusetts, and remained there until he came to Wisconsin. He was married in Chippewa Falls, Jan. —, 1870, to Florence B., daughter of Charles B. and Thersa A. (Bell) Chapman. She was born in Toronto, Canada. They have one son, Charles Coleman.
