Obituary Notice for Mary (Buzzell) Taylor
22 Feb 1832, Plattsburg, NY - 3 Dec 1915, Sellwood, Oregon
3 Dec 1915
An Old Resident Passes Away
After a prolonged illness dating from Jan. 7th, 1914 when she
had a stroke of paralysis, Mrs. Mary M. Taylor, of 1654 E. 11th
St., passed away at 7 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3d. About four days
previous to her death she contracted a severe cold and pneumonia
symptoms developed which was the immediate cause of her death.
Mrs. Taylor, whose maiden name was Mary M. Buzzell, was born
Feb. 22d, 1832, at Plattsburgh, N. Y., where her parents had
removed from their native state, Vermont. In 1840 they went to
Green Lake Co., Wisconsin and she was sent to Ohio to receive
her education. She went to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in the year
1854, which at that time was almost a wilderness inhabited
principally by Indians and half breeds, where she taught the
first public school for two years, when she was married to Jas.
A. Taylor Christmas eve, 1856, this being the first marriage of
white people in that settlement, and her oldest son, Frank A.
Taylor was the first white child born there.
Jas. A. Taylor was the pioneer lumber manufacturer, merchant and
hotel man of Chippewa Falls, until 1902, when after sustaining a
stroke of paralysis he decided to go to California and Mr. and
Mrs. Taylor came by way of Portland to visit their son Frank who
had preceded them. They decided to remain here and bought the
property in Sellwood, where Mr. Taylor died in February, 1906,
and where Mrs. Taylor lived the remainder of her life.
Four children were born to them, some of whom who were with her
at the time of her death. She was a foster mother to Mrs. Kate
Burnham and her daughter Eleanor. Other surviving relatives are
two grand daughters, both married and living in Battle Creek,
Mich., daughters of her son, John I. Taylor, who died there in
1902; and three brothers, L. K., C. C. and F. M. Buzzell in
Chippewa Falls, the last of a family of eleven children born to
the parents of Mrs. Taylor.
Very impressive funeral services were held in Walter C.
Kenworthy's Chapel last Monday at 2 p. m. conducted by Rev. W.
S. McCullagh of the Presbyterian Church. Two solos were sung by
Mrs. W. S. Grider, the songs selected by Mrs. Taylor's sons. The
first was 'The Isle of Somewhere," and the second "In the Sweet
Bye and Bye," which was sung for the first time at the late Jas.
A. Taylor's mothers funeral by the author of the song, J. P.
Webster, and was also sung at Mr. Taylor's funeral.
Interment was made in Milwankie Cemetery.
In the death of Mrs. Taylor, Sellwood loses one of its oldest
and most highly esteemed citizens and a noble woman who has done
her whole duty to family and friends.
