Stewart, Alice (9 SEP 1919 - 1 DEC 1947)
Apparent, excessive speeding has resulted in a highway accident that claimed the life of Mrs. Earl Stewart, 28, of Stanley, and put two other persons, Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield. Mrs. Stewart’s husband, driver of the car, escaped without a scratch.
The accident occurred on Highway 29 about one mile east of the Curtiss (Clark Co.) corners at 12:50 Monday morning. The party was traveling east when the car went out of Stewart’s control.
Traffic officer, Wm. Nelson, and deputy coroner, Ernie Snyder, Neillsville, investigators in the accident, both reported the car was evidently traveling at a tremendous rate of speed and was out of control for more than 1200 feet. After traveling a long distance on the right hand shoulder of the highway it skidded sideways across the highway for 150 feet and then rolled a distance of 135 feet, shearing off ten steel and wooden fence posts and coming to a stop after striking a telephone pole.
The car came to a stop in an upright position, but Mrs. Stewart had been thrown from the car, was crushed beneath it. Mrs. Smith sustained numerous lacerations about her head and has several broken bones in her back. Mr. Smith was thrown through the side window, suffering severe head lacerations.
Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at two o’clock from our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Stanley for Mrs. Stewart. The Rev. J. N. Midtlien officiated.
Mrs. Earl Stewart, nee Alice Rixford, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rixford. She was born at Stanley on Sept. 9, 1919, and was married to Earl Stewart on April 27, 1941. Surviving her sudden passing away, besides her husband, are her parents, one sister, Mrs. Walter Quilling of Sidney, Montana, and two brothers, both of Stanley.
