Foremost Foods Company recently announced plans to close its whey processing
facilities in Owen and Stratford within one year, and has offered to sell the
plants to area cheese makers.
The plants employ 70 persons and process some 600 million pounds of fluid whey a
year into dried whey used in animal feeds and dried lactose (milk sugar) for use
in foods and pharmaceuticals. It is anticipated that present plant employees
would continue to work at the two sites for the new owners.
Foremost spokesman Michael Doyle cited inflationary costs to the company for
processing animal feed gread whey as the principal reason for selling the
facilities.
