Schnabel, Russell R. (30 October 1931 – 10 February 1988) With Flag
Rev. Richard Weber officiated during services on Saturday, February 13, at St.
John’s Evangelical Lutheran church for Russell R. Schnabel who died Wednesday,
February 10, following an accident at work. Janice Mayer and Sharon Nemitz
provided music. Nephews served as pallbearers. Interment was in Neillsville City
Cemetery. Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post #73 conducted graveside rites.
Gesche Funeral Home handles the arrangements.
Mr. Schnabel was born in the Town of Grant on October 30, 1931, to Alfred and
Lena (Lipke) Schnabel and was educated at the Reed School. He worked in the
Neillsville area before entering the U.S. Navy on November 4, 1955, serving
overseas for a time and was discharged August 5, 1957. Returning home, he was
employed at Neillsville Milk Products, Badger Consolidated and Modern Sleep,
Marshfield. In 1974, he began work at Land-O-Lakes Cheese, Spencer, where he
remained until his death. He was a member of Haugen-Richmond American Legion
Post #73 and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
On January 23, 1954, he married Arlene M. Kupke in McGregor, Iowa. She survives
along with two children, Mrs. Mark (Joan) Gaier, Chippewa Falls, and Daniel
Schnabel, Neillsville. Also surviving are two sisters, Lillian Wagner off Wis.
Rapids, and Ilene Scharf, Neillsville; five brothers, Herbert of Granton, Harold
of Warner, S.D., Verlyn of Marshfield, Leon and Delbert, both of Neillsville;
and two grandchildren, Dana and Cole. He was predeceased by his parents; a
sister, Velda and a brother Clarence.
