On Thursday, June 16, 1977, members of the Owen American Legion Auxiliary – Van
Huizen-Fritz Post 123, held a formal banquet at the Holy Rosary Hall in honor of
the 50th anniversary of the organization of the group. The charter of the Legion
Auxiliary was drawn up on June 30, 1927.
There was a cocktail hour preceding the banquet held at the Legion Hall. After
the banquet a brief history was given of the auxiliary unit, followed by a
sing-a-long of old songs by all who attended. After the festivities some of the
guests returned to the legion hall to reminisce. All the members wore Golden
Corsages in honor of the occasion.
Seven original Charter Members attended the affair. They were: Mrs. Henry (Avis)
Anderson, Mrs. John (Hilda) Awe, Mrs. Roy (Charlotte) Gabriel, Mrs. Wilbert
(Eva) Hansen, Mrs. Verne (Hester) Welker, Mrs. S.M. (Irene) Munson, and Natalie
Scherf. Charter Members, Mrs. John (Julia) Gummerson, Mrs. Leighton (Carrie)
Stoker, Mrs. Warren (Violet) Brown were unable to attend. Six Charter members
are deceased.
Also attending the celebration was the 7th District President, Mrs. Merton
Halverson and her husband from Onalaska.
