Virgil A. Schmitt, 91, of Cadott passed away peacefully and went to join his wife, Lucille, on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at the Fall Creek Valley Care Center in Fall Creek, WI.
Virgil was born on February 28, 1918, the son of Raymond and Constance (Reese) Schmitt in Iowa. He grew up in Thorp, where his family owned and operated the Thorp Bakery. In 1965, they moved to Cadott where Virgil owned and operated the Cadott Bakery, which is still in operation.
Virgil was united in marriage to Lucille A. Wingad on February 27, 1943, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thorp. Virgil was a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, where he served as Eucharistic minister. He was also past president and member of the Cadott Lions Club and the Cadott Chamber of Commerce. He loved deer hunting, bird hunting, and attending church.
Virgil is survived by his children: Michael (Connie) Schmitt of Stetsonville, WI, Thomas (Barb) Schmitt of Eau Claire, Daniel (Carol) Schmitt of Cadott, Patrick (Linda) Schmitt of Eau Clarie, Jonas (Glenda) Schmitt of Evansville, WI, and Kathleen (Lyle) Bourget of Two Rivers, WI; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: James Schmitt of Wabasha, MN, and Bernard (Mikki) Schmitt of Milwaukee, WI; and a sister, Rita (Ed) Golen of Milwaukee, WI.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Schmitt, on October 27, 2007; parents; two daughters in infancy; a brother, Ray Schmitt; and four sisters: Mercedes Nieman, Rose Schmitt, Lucille Deitsche, and Therese Conrad.
A funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cadott with Father Donald Bauer officiating. Interment was in St. Rose Cemetery, Town of Sigel. Family and friends called from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Leiser Funeral Home in Cadott with a 7:30 p.m. rosary service, and also Wednesday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Fall Creek Valley Nursing Home and St. Joseph’s Hospice for the special care they gave to Virgil and to Father Bauer for his prayers and visits.
