Heikkinen, Hjalmer J. (18 Nov 1887 – 10 Jul 1977)
Hjalmer John Heikkinen, age 89, Withee, passed away at the Havenet Nursing Home
in Owen at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, July 10, 1977.
Services were held on Wednesday, July 13, 1977, at Bethany Lutheran Church in
Owen, with burial following in Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. M.K. Sallman of
Schambaugh, Michigan officiated at the services.
Mr. Heikkinen was born on November 18, 1887 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He
started working in the iron ore mines in Negaunee, Michigan and here he married
Mary Ford, his first wife, on January 20, 1904.
They moved to Owen in 1912,w hre they settled on a farm in the Town of Hoard,
which he cleared and farmed for forty years. His first wife died in March of
1937. His second marriage was to Lempi Polari on June 22, 1948. She passed away
on March 5, 1977.
Mr. Heikkinen was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. William (Jennie) Kangas of Owen, Mrs. Ed
(Celia) Struensee of Neillsville, and Mrs. Edward (Sigrid) Brecke Sr. of
Stetsonville; two sons, Arvid Heikkinen of Hayward and Toby Heikkinen of
Lexington Nebraska; one sister, Amanda Kukko in Finland.
He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first and second wives and one daughter.
