Sixty publishers and their wives, representing weekly and daily newspapers in
the state, were in Neillsville last Thursday evening for a surprise party
honoring Robert Harvey, past publisher of the Clark County Press.
Harvey though he was going out for a quiet evening with his daughter and
son-in-law, Gary and Jane Slaats, present co-publishers of the Press, and his
wife, Dorene.
As the retired editor entered the party room doors at the Bali Hai Supper Club,
there before him were members of the group, shouting their greetings. Newspaper
people from across the state attended the gathering.
The program, honoring Harvey’s efforts as a newspaper reporter for papers,
including the New York Times and Michigan dailies, as well as his leadership
roles in the community of Neillsville and Clark County, was led off by Romain
Brandt, Executive Director of Madison based Wisconsin Newspaper Association.
Master of Ceremonies was Bob Wright, publisher of the Marquette County Tribune,
Montello.
The highlight of the evening came when Robert Gauger, publisher and editor of
the Whitehall Times, referred to Harvey as “a
newspaperman’s---newspaperman—through and through---we love you.”
