LaVern was born Aug. 8, 1912, in Wausau to Fred and Christine (Hansen) Riedel. He attended elementary school in Marshfield and graduated from Marshfield Senior High School in 1939 where he participated in hockey, football, tennis and M-Club.
He was united in marriage to Lillian E. Berghammer on Sept. 2, 1939, at St. John's Catholic Church in Marshfield. Lillian died Feb. 27, 2007.
LaVern loved playing and watching sports and participated in local Marshfield teams in baseball, softball, and his true love, hockey. He was a true sportsman, playing and competing at a high level for the love of the sport. LaVern worked many jobs in youth but spent 34 years with Roddis Veneer and then Weyerhaeuser after the company was sold. He retired in August 1974, and spent some years in retirement traveling the United States with his wife, Lillian and his brother, Lyle and his wife. He and Lillian were known for their dancing prowess by many Marshfield natives at such establishments as the Marshfield "Palm Gardens" for many years.
LaVern is survived by his two sons, Donald (Sally) Riedel of Marshfield and David (Barbara) Riedel of Iron Mountain, Mich.; six grandchildren, Eric (Lisa) Riedel of Marshfield, Susan Riedel of Alma Center, Samantha (Mason Axberg) Riedel of Iron Mountain, Mich., Scott Riedel of Herndon, Va., Mark (Paula) Riedel and Melissa Riedel, both of Houston, Texas; and numerous great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters, Nancy Rustad and Betty (Roman) Lauby, all of Wisconsin Rapids.
A great dad and husband, he was loved by all and will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers, Lyle, Marvin and Ellsworth; and his sisters, Ione Haas and Margaret Christy.
