Stapel, Walter H. (13 July 1914 - 8 Oct. 1988)

SPENCER - Walter H. Stapel, 74, Spencer, died Saturday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spencer, with the Rev. William Ruhbusch officiating.

Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Marshfield. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rux Funeral Home, Spencer.

He was born July 13, 1914, in Jackson, Minn., a son of the late Arthur C. and Minna Stapel. He attended Thorp schools and graduated from Spencer High School. He also attended vocational schools in Wausau and Minneapolis.

He married Gertrude Stelzl Sept. 9, 1951, at Trinity Church, Spencer. She survives. He worked at the 29 Super Market and A&P Supermarket, both of Wausau. He also was employed by Land O’ Lakes of Spencer.

He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard Artillery, serving in the U.S. Arm from 1941-45 in the European Theatre.

He was a member of the Trinity Church, where he had served as financial secretary and was active in the Lutheran Laymen’s League.

Besides his wife, he was survived by one brother, Arthur of Hazelhurst.
