Wendt, Florence L. (January 23, 1916 - October 21, 2009)
Florence L. Wendt, 93, of Merrill passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Pine Crest Nursing Home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. She was born January 24, 1916, the second youngest of twelve to the late Robert & Anna (Hahn) Gutknecht in the Town of Berlin.
On October 24, 1936 she married Helmuth Wendt. Florence and her husband were dairy farmers until 1959. She worked as a seamstress at Hanson Glove from 1960 until 1968. Florence was a member of the Ladies Aide at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hamburg. She loved to set hair, sew and crochet. Florence especially enjoyed taking the grandkids to the cabin and going fishing in Canada.
Survivors include her two daughters, Caroline (Robert) Riemer of Athens and Bonnie
Benzinger of Merrill; four grandsons, Allan (Kerry) Riemer of Athens, Michael Riemer
of Biloxi, Miss., Ron Benzinger of Merrill and Thomas Benzinger of British
Columbia, Canada; great-granddaughter Christin Riemer; great-grandson Jacob Riemer; two sisters-in-law, Leona Raasch and Eleanor Wendt; and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son-in-law, David A. Benzinger; her granddaughter baby Riemer; her siblings, Emma (Edwin) Utech, Emil (Emma) Gutknecht, Elsie (Carl) Utecht, Martin (Hertha) Gutknecht, Albert (Dora) Gutknecht, Ida (Emil Porath and later Carl) Krenz, Lillie (Siegmund) Goetsch, Della (Herb) Hanke, Esther (Ben) Sturm, Edwin (Lillian) Gutknecht, and Elroy Gutknecht; her brothers-in-law, Leonard (Edna) Wendt, Alvin Wendt and Norman Raasch; and her sister-in-law Erna (Lawrence) Henrichs.
Services will be held Monday, October 26, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran
Church, Athens. The Rev. Szeto will preside. Visitation will be from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.
before the service, also at the church. The family has requested memorials be made to
Trinity Lutheran Church of Athens for the Salem Cemetery monument fund.
The Waid Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
