Nemitz, Carl Ryan (Choking - 1985)
Carl Ryan Nemitz celebrated his fourth birthday on October 10, possibly thanks
to the emergency medical training of a Clark County Department officer.
Three days earlier Carl, and his father, Carl Nemitz, Sr., Rt. 2 Neillsville,
had been getting gas at the Neillsville Holiday Store. Carl was sucking on
Lifesaver candies when he apparently swallowed one whole. It became lodged in
his throat and caused him to begin choking. Efforts by his father to dislodge
the object failed and the youth began to turn blue from the lack of oxygen in a
few minutes.
Also present at the station was Traffic Officer James Hayes of rural
Neillsville, who had just gassed up his squad car and was waiting for the
ticket. Like many other county officers, Hayes has been trained as an EMT.
Nemitz senior made him aware of his emergency.
“I knew it was serious when I saw the kid had stopped breathing,” remarked the
officer. He took Carl over his chest and performed the Heimlich maneuver,
popping the candy out and restoring the child’s respiration. Carl recovered
within a short while.
“His father and I are very appreciative of what the officer has done and
thankful that he was there at the right time,” said Barb Nemitz, Carl’s mother.
She noted that Carl is now very careful as to how he chews his candy.
