Hoops, John (82nd Birthday – 2 Oct. 1937)

Spencer - John Hoops, resident of this vicinity for over 40 years, celebrated his 82 birthday anniversary, which occurred on Saturday, at a family reunion Sunday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vanderhoof. The occasion was also the 19th birthday anniversary of his grandson, Wilbur Hoops.

The afternoon and evening were spent socially, and a dinner and supper were served, with Mrs. Alfred Hull and Mrs. John Steiner in charge of the kitchen. Granddaughters of Mr. Hoops who served as waitresses were Mrs. Laura Brockopp, Mrs. Harold Fisher, Mrs. Herbert Heckel, Mrs. Paul Bymers, Mrs. Siegert Kresselt, Jean Luepke Lucille Mellenthin, and Mary Bymers. Autumn leaves interwoven with white and pink streamers adorned the rooms, and a large birthday cake served as the centerpiece of the table.

Among those from Spencer who attended the reunion were Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hoops and sons, Alvin, Elmer, and Verlin, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Hoops and sons, James and Lloyd, Mr. and Mrs. William Plath and sons, Sherwood and William Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vanderhoof, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Voelker and children, Carroll, Iris, and Barbara, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bymers, Mrs. Elizabeth Hoops, and son, Wilbur, Mrs. Laura Brockopp and daughter, Mable, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Huber and sons, David and Elroy, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Luepke and daughters, Jean and Virginia, Mr. and Mrs. Siegert Krasselt, Ernest Krebs, and Alfred Hull, and Mrs. John Steiner.

Marshfield guests at the Vanderhoof home for the occasion included Mr. and Mrs. Harry Graham and daughter, Doris, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Heckel and daughter Shirley, Mrs. Mary Bymers, Miss Minnie Boehning, Walter Eisner, Adolph Karau, and Archie Blattner. Guests from Merrill were Mr. and Mrs. William Natzke and son. Mr. and Mrs. Huber Natzke and daughter, Grace and Henry Natzke ***and from Wayside were Mrs.****Mrs. Emma Natzke, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lappnow, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brockman, and Mrs. Ernest Schroeder. Among those who came from Unity were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Molle and daughters, Darlene, Berdine and Bonita, and Miss Marie Lepp.

Other out of town guests included Miss Lucille Mellenthin, Madison; Lawrence Natzke and Norbert Mellenthin, Michigan; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martin, Fremont; Edwin Schroeder, Glenbeaulah; Henry Hoops, Dancy; Mr. and Mrs. Merton Youmans, Loyal; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hoops, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Carol Stengel and daughter, Grace, Green Bay; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Natzke, Thorp; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Fisher and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Keilberg, Fond du Lac. One son H. C. Hoops, Fond du Lac, was unable to attend.

Mr. Hoops who operated a farm near here before moving to the village, has been making his home with his children since the death of his wife about four years ago. For a number of years he was engaged in carrying mail between the depot and post office. In spite of his advanced age, Mr. Hoops enjoys good health, and today accompanied his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mathilda Schroeder, to her home at Wayside for a month's visit.
