Kenneth H. Weisenberger Sr., 76, formerly of Marathon, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Poplar Place Assisted Living, Rothschild.
He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.
He was born July 30, 1934, in Marathon, son of the late William Sr. and Katherine (Bedynek) Weisenberger. Kenneth married Joan Jagodinski on May 17, 1958, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. She survives.
Kenneth was the owner and operator of Weisenberger's Bar in Marathon from 1960 until his retirement in 1997. He was a former employee of Crestline in Wausau and the White House Creamery in Marathon.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957 serving in Japan and was a member of the American Legion Alois Dreikosen Post No. 469, Marathon. He was a member of the Marathon Village Board from 1964 to 1976 and was vice president and director of the Marathon County Tavern League for many years. Kenneth organized the Marathon City Softball Fast Pitch League from 1951 to 1971 and also organized the Invitational Fast Pitch Softball Tournament from 1961 to 1971. His softball career in league play started in 1950 with the Marathon Lagers. He started the Marathon Pool League from 1953 to 1973 and was an usher for St. Mary's Church for 15 years.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends in "Paradise" (the cottage up north), dancing and listening to polka music. Some of his other hobbies included fishing, playing cards, bowling and watching both the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Kenneth especially had a great love for his wife, Joan and their six children and ten grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; six children, Ken Weisenberger Jr., Mary (Michael) Starzinski, ViAnn Teresinski (Daryl Schmitt), all of Marathon, Michael (Linda) Weisenberger, Aurora, Ill., Barbara (DaWayne) Schreiber, Abbotsford and Andrew Weisenberger, Edgar; ten grandchildren, Matthew, Rachel, Amy, David, Steven, Thomas, Katie, Kristen, Jeffrey and Kelsie; one brother, William Weisenberger Jr., Wausau; two sisters, Evelyn Lang, Wausau and Helen Strasser, Edgar; and two brothers-in-law, Elroy Strasser, Edgar and Ray Myszka, Marathon.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Laparda Mullen, Florence Lang, Lillian Leitermann and Eldora Myszka.
The funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, July 16, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Joseph Diermeier presided. Burial was in the parish cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 469, Marathon.
The family wishes to thank all who were involved with Kenneth's care. Thank you to Rev. Joe and Sister Mary Ann Weisman for all of their prayers and visits. Thank you to all of the staff at Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services, staff at Community Care of Central Wisconsin and to Nancy and her staff at Poplar Place Senior Assisted Living in Rothschild.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon.
