Barnes, John V.
(1843 – 16 Aug 1915)
John V. Barnes died on Aug. 16th at his home in
Southwest Pine Valley after an illness extending over several months. Deceased
was born in Livingston County, New York, in 1843, and at the age of three years
went to Grant County, Wisconsin, with his parents. There he grew to young
manhood and enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 20 years, in Co. I, 20th
Wis. Vol. He served three years in the war and then returned to Grant County
where he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Winters in 1867. In 1879 he came
with his family to Clark County, locating on the farm in Southwest Pine Valley
which remained his home ever since. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs.
Barnes, but two of whom survive their parents. They are Mrs. Ruth Nihill of
North Dakota and Rolla Barnes of Montana. He is also survived by one brother and
one sister, Charles Barnes, of Grant County, and Mrs. Jos. Winter of Pine
Valley. Deceased was a man of high ideals and integrity and was respected by all
the community. He was a pleasant old gentleman, kindly and generous and his
death is genuinely regretted. The funeral was held Friday, services being
conducted by Rev. Colman and interment being made in the Pine Valley Cemetery.
