Poppe, George William (4
November 1888 - 8 January 1969)
George William Poppe, 80, lifelong
resident of the Greenwood area, died January 8, in Neillsville of a lingering
illness. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from Immanuel United
Church, the Rev. David Logue officiated. Burial was made in Forest Hill Cemetery
in Braun Settlement.
Pallbearers were: Darrel Horn, Herbert Horn, Donald
Horn, Lloyd Horn, Kenneth Horn and Gerald Horn. The Immanuel Church choir sang,
“Does Jesus Care” and “The Old Rugged Cross” accompanied on the organ by Mrs.
Alvin Albert.
Mr. Poppe, son of Gustave and Augusta (Cotzer) Poppe, was
born November 4, 1888, in the Town of Longwood. He was married June 18, 1913, to
Mathilda Horn in the Braun Settlement Reformed Church in Greenwood. They settled
on a farm in Longwood, where they continued to reside following their retirement
in 1955. Since 1962 they have lived in a mobile home on the farm of their
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hendrickson, east of Greenwood.
They celebrated their golden wedding in June, 1963.
Mr. Poppe was a
member of Immanuel United Church and for a number of years a member of the
Longwood town board as supervisor.
He is survived by his wife; two
daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Mayvin) Hendrickson of Greenwood and Mrs. Leroy (Violet)
Wadzinski of Ravenna, Nebr.; a son, Elery, of Stafford, Va.; nine grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
