Clara Sailer
(3 Jun 1903 – 2 Mar 1997)
Clara Marie Sailer, 93, Owen, died on Sunday,
March 2, 1997, at the Memorial Hospital of Taylor County, Medford.
Funeral services were held March 5 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen, with
Rev. Al Jakubowski presiding. Burial was in the Dorchester Memorial Cemetery.
Sons served as pallbearers.
The former Clara Mertens was born on June 3,
1903, in the Town of Little Black, rural Dorchester, the daughter of Henry and
Elizabeth (Henrichs) Mertens. On October 23, 1922, Clara and Conrad Sailer were
united in marriage. They farmed in the Town of Little Black until 1947, and
moved to Owen. Clara operated the Cozy Corner Restaurant and later the Freemont
Hotel in Owen. She was the cook at the former Havenet Nursing Home in Owen. She
was a member of the Owen American Legion Auxiliary, the Owen Homemakers Club and
Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Parish Council of Catholic Women.
Clara
is survived by six sons, Earl (Nancy) Sailer of Wisconsin Rapids, Gordon (Enid)
Sailer of West Bend, Leon (Frankie) Sailer of Tomahawk, Glenn (Ada) Sailer of
Evergreen, Col., James Sailer of Milwaukee and Raymond “Buddie” (Nancy) Sailer
of Pewaukee; four daughters, Marjorie Lueth of Greenfield, Doris Harder of
Hartland, Florence Mueller of West Allis and Winnifred (Millard) Glasshof of
Milwaukee; two sisters, Marie (Robert) Schnedler of Milwaukee and Madge (Arnold)
Rhyner of Dorchester; two brothers, Lawrence Mertens of Milwaukee and George
Mertens of Waukesha; 71 grandchildren, 149 great-grandchildren and 11
great-great grandchildren and many friends.
She was preceded in death by
her husband; two daughters, Ruth Hughes and Mildred Schnieder; four brothers,
Albert, John, Carl and Alfred Mertens, and one sister, Pearl Scholz.
