Charles Sauter (19 May 1877 – 22 Oct 1958)
Charles
Sauter, 81, former farmer and businessman of this community (Dorchester, Clark
Co., WI), died at his home in Tomahawk Wednesday of this week. He had resided in
this area from the age of seven until about a quarter century ago. Mr. Sauter
had been in active health until suffering a heart attack last Thursday. He
entered a hospital for treatment on Saturday and Tuesday returned home where he
succumbed to another attack at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 22.
Funeral services will
be held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Tomahawk, tomorrow (Friday) at 1 p.m.
with the Rev. John Schaadt officiating. Burial will be in Dorchester Memorial
Cemetery, about 3:00 or 3:30. Dorchester people may view the deceased at the
cemetery here. He lies in state at Nick & Sons funeral home in Tomahawk, now
until 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Charles Sauter was born May 19, 1877, in
Schaffrausen, Switzerland. In 1882 he was brought to the United States when his
parents immigrated.
He and Elizabeth Tessmer were married here in 1904.
Some years after their marriage, the couple moved to a farm northeast of the
village in the town of Holton, which they owned and operated until moving to
Tomahawk in 1935. During the years on the farm, he also operated a service
station and tavern on the present location of Seidel, Inc.
Surviving are
his widow, three children: Lawrence Sauter of Princeton, Elmer Sauter of
Hartford, and Amanda (Mrs. Russell Lind) of Elmwood Park, Ill., and eight
grandchildren. A son, Harry, died in 1954.
Also surviving are two
brothers, August and Edwin of the village, and three sisters: Mrs. Tillie
Weideman of the town of Mayville, Mrs. Minnie Kalepp of Abbotsford, and Mrs.
Alma Marcott of Phillips. Two sisters, Mary and Louise, and three brothers,
Joseph, Otto and Albert also preceded him in death.
