Barkdoll Held At Medford In
Murder Case
Medford, Wis. - David Barkdoll, 35, was held in the county
jail without bond today on charges of murder in connection with the fatal
shooting of his former housekeeper, Mrs. Esther Chankin, 30.
Barkdoll,
said to have confessed shooting the woman as she lay asleep Tuesday in the farm
home near here of her uncle, Ward Shepard, was bound over for a preliminary
hearing next week, the date yet to be fixed.
According to Undersheriff
Edward Goeddert, Barkdoll, formerly of North Milwaukee, came here Monday night
from his home at West Bend, crawled through a kitchen window in the Shepard home
and made his way to a bedroom where he shot Mrs. Chankin through the head and
neck. Her two children, aged 5 and 2 years, slept at her side.
Shepard
was shot in the leg as he attempted to prevent Barkdoll’s escape.
