EXTRA! Life Sentence Given Barkdoll Of
West Bend
Medford, Wis. - Pleading guilty to first degree murder charges,
David Barkdoll, 35, West Bend, today was sentenced to state prison for life. He
confessed fatally shooting Mrs. Esther Chankin, 30, his former housekeeper, when
she tired of his attentions.
When arrested last Tuesday, Barkdoll asked
for sentence as soon as possible. He waived preliminary hearing. Circuit Judge
G. N. Risjord arranged today’s court session to accommodate the man.
Barkdoll told the court he met Mrs. Chankin in Milwaukee. Later he took her and
her two children to West Bend. She tired of him, Barkdoll said, and came here to
her father’s home. Despairing of regaining her love, Barkdoll said he broke into
the house while she slept and shot her twice. He surrendered the next day.
