Haselow, Linda (Math Contest – 13 FEB 1964)

LINDA HASELOW RECOGNIZED AMONG TOP MATH STUDENTS

Linda Haselow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Haselow, city, has been named one of Wisconsin’s top high school mathematics students as determined by a statewide contest.  Winners were announced by Carl J. Vanderlin of the University of Wisconsin Extension Mathematics department.  Professor Vanderlin was chairman for the contest conducted by the Wisconsin section of the Mathematical Association of America on Mar. 14, 1964.

More than 22,000 students representing 344 high schools participated in a preliminary objective test given on Feb. 13.  The final team, for students scoring highest on the Feb. 13 test, was administered to 1,250 students from 235 schools.  This essay type test was given at 27 test centers in the state.  It was scored on the basis of solutions, method of attack, evidence of ingenuity and general insight, inventiveness and correct reasoning.

The contest is designed to identify outstanding students early in their careers so they may be encouraged to pursue studies in mathematics.

In addition to recognition for outstanding ability, the top 49 winners receive cash prizes.  An initialed gold pin is sent to students ranking in the upper four per cent, and a certificate is sent to every contestant placing in the top 10 per cent.
