Prohaska, Joseph A. Jr. (25 APR 1921 - 21 JUN 2012)

Joseph A. Prohaska Jr., 91, Medford, died on Thursday, June 21 at Country Gardens Assisted Living in Medford.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 25 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Medford, with Rev. Pete Warmanen officiating. Pallbearers were Paul and Joshua Prohaska and Beaner and Dennis Lemke.

Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.

Joseph Prohaska was born on April 25, 1921 in Phillips to the late Joseph and Mary (Kougl) Prohaska.

He attended Phillips elementary schools, was a 1939 graduate of Phillips High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He and his wife established the Prohaska scholarship in 1992, and continue helping students from Medford, Phillips and Ladysmith continue their education.

On December 14, 1946 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, he married Betty Jane Lemke, who preceded him in death on December 22, 2003. He worked as an insurance agent with Madison National Life and eventually owned and operated Prohaska and Associates, an insurance company, for many years while residing in Antigo, Thorp and moving to Medford in 1963.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Phillips Masonic Lodge No. 225 and Western Bohemian-Fraternal Association of Cadott. He enjoyed reading, fishing, cars and the outdoors.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Paul D. (Kari) Prohaska of Wausau and Joshua J. (Heather) Prohaska of Ladysmith; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, David J. on October 2, 2002, and two brothers, Elmer, and one in infancy.
