ALAN KRAHN AT GOSPEL CENTER WORK
CAMP
Ten young people, from all over the United States, arrived in
Cleveland late Saturday night to participate in an International Walther League
Work Camp which is being held at the Gospel Center, 70th and Lexington. Making
this Lutheran Center their home for the next three weeks, the youth of the
Lutheran Church, Mo. Synod, will participate in various service activities.
Among them is Alan Krahn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Krahn, Owen and a member
of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee.
The purpose of this camp is
that the youth of the Mo. Synod Lutheran Church may offer their services to the
residents of the Hough area of Cleveland. This densely populated inner city,
made up mostly of colored families, is located in the East-Central side of
Cleveland. It represents a tremendous mission field where most of the residents
have changed their homes at least once in a period of three years.
Each
Thursday at the center, the leaguers will help with the distribution of clothes
to the Hough area residents.
In the near future, the Work Campers will be
taking many of the Sunday School children on a field trip, if possible. Many of
these children have never had an opportunity to leave this area.
While
work is being stressed, various forms of entertainment, lectures, and
discussions are being scheduled. Planned speakers include members of the NAACP,
and the Community Action for Youth (CYA). Also other Walther League societies in
the Ohio District have invited the youth to participate in their programs, such
as swimming, miniature golfing, etc.
