Meyer, Margaret R. (1860? - 28 NOV 1917)
Note: First name taken from
St. Stephen's Cemetery listing
The Julius Meyer house was destroyed by
fire of an unknown origin Thursday evening and Mrs. Meyer's dead body was found
in the cellar of the burned house. Examination of the body by physicians
disclosed evidence incriminating a party or parties as yet unknown. Mr. Meyer,
husband of the dead woman, is an inmate of the county jail since Saturday, when
he was arrested on suspicion as being the party guilty of the inhuman deed.
Mrs. Meyer was a woman of 57 years of age, while her husband was but 49
years old. They ahve to grown sons, Raymond, a boy of 32 at home, and Lenos, 19
years old, and is employed at the Otto Gruenke Cheese Factory at Heathville.
Both boys had been at home that day and had, with neighbor boys, left for
Riplinger to attend a dance that evening, while their parents had been by auto
to the Fred and Aug. Dankemyer homes, and returning after dark. Mr. Meyer
claimed to have tone from the house to the barn to attend a sick horse, and
after that service, discovered his house to be in flames and too far gone to
save any part of it. Neighbors coming upon the scene found Meyer carrying water
and throwing it on a wood pile near the buring house, and upon questioning Meyer
as to the whereabouts of his wife, he answered that he didn't know where she
was, but thought she must be in the burning house. District State Fire Marshal
Mr. Good was telegraphed for, and with Clark County officials, was on the scene
Friday and so certain are they that Mrs. Meyer came to her death with the
knowledge and consent of her husband, that he is now in jail awaiting further
developments.
Deceased is a sister of A. Rueth of Spokeville and he took
her body to his home, where it was cared for until the burial from the Catholic
Church at Chili on Tuesday. Another brother, Wm. Reuth, coming from St. Louis in
response to the new Friday with his daughter Agnes very ill and on that account,
did not remain for the funeral here Tuesday.
