Rondorf, Sgt. Dennis (Military Awards - February 1969)
Sgt. Dennis
Rondorf, husband of Sandra Rondorf of West Bend and son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Rondorf of Greenwood, has been awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action
while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile
force in Vietnam. Sp. 4 Rondorf distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous
action on February 24, while serving as a squad leader with Company C., 1st
Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry during a reconnaissance mission. When his
unit became heavily engaged with a well fortified enemy force, Spec. Rondorf
exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he directed and covered the
withdrawal of his squad. With complete disregard for his own safety he remained
exposed in order to pinpoint enemy emplacements. Although wounded, Spec. Rondorf
refused medical evacuation in order to stay with his squad. His concern for his
comrades and his heroic devotion to duty was inspirational to the remainder of
his unit. His action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military
service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States
Army.
He also received a Purple Heart, the Army Commendation medal with a
V for Valor earlier in February.
