Berger, Donald "Don" A. (18 NOV 1931 - 21 APR 2013)

Donald "Don" A. Berger, 81, Medford, died surrounded by his family and under hospice care on Sunday, April 21 at Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center in Medford, where he had resided the past two days.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joseph Stefancin officiating. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford at a later date.

Urn bearers are his special friends, Pete Ulrich and Lloyd Weinzatl.

Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.

Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.

Donald Berger was born on November 18, 1931 in Medford to the late Herman J. and Julia (Stendel) Berger. He attended Spruce Grove School in the Town of Deer Creek and Medford High School. He worked at Brost Trucking.

On April 27, 1957 at St. Ann's Church in the Town of Greenwood, he married Armella F. Thums, who survives. In 1958 he worked road construction in Milwaukee, then from 1961 to 1987 he worked for Owens-Illinois Timber Corp. in Tomahawk. He also did woods work and worked odd jobs in the Medford area until his retirement.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and past member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Westboro. He enjoyed woods work, hobby farming, raising homer pigeons and horses, going to horse auctions and small animal sales.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Mark (Debbi) of Westboro, Patricia (Kenny) Weinzatl of Prentice and Ann "Shortie" Wiitala of Ogema; two siblings, Vernon "Mick" and Marilyn (Dan) Carstensen, both of Medford; a brother-in-law, Joe Evisch of Bessemer, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Mabel Berger of Bruce Crossing, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Mark) Schmidt, Joseph (Tanya) Berger, Stephanie Berger, Craig (Lori) Weinzatl, Melissa Weinzatl and Megan and Nicholas Wiitala; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Ruth Ann and Wallace, both in infancy, and Norma Evisch and Robert "Rusty."

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to his family to be designated at a later date.
