Sowieja, Elizabeth “Elsie” (19 Aug 1927 – 07 April 2013)

Elizabeth J. “Elsie” Sowieja, 85, Tucson, Ariz. formerly of Merrill and Greenwood, passed away on Sunday, April 7, at Devon Gables Health Care Center in Tucson, following declining health and a stroke in mid-March. Cremation has taken place. A graveside memorial service will be held on May 17 at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Greenwood. Interment will follow.

Elsie Grabara was born on Aug. 19, 1927, in Kenosha, the second of three children of George and Mary (nee Hilgarth) Grabara. Elsie married Jerry Sowieja on Feb. 21, 1948. They moved to Greenwood in 1948. They had six children and Elsie spent her life as a loving wife, mother and homemaker. Upon the passing of her loving husband in 2009, she moved to Tucson to enjoy the remainder of her life.

Survivors include two daughters, Sue (Dick) Scheuerman,, Hendersonville, N. C., and Carol Zahn, Carrolton, Texas; three sons, Donald (Terry) Soweija, Tucson, Ariz., Charles (Ginny) Sowieja, Merrill and Mike (Brenda) Sowieja, Richfield; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, George Grabara.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry. Her sister, Mary; and her parents, George and Mary.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributations be made to Gene and Jerry Memorial Activity Fund, Greenwood School District, 306 W. Central Ave., Greenwood, WI, 54437.
