The Greenwood Public Library will celebrate its 100th year of operation with an open house event on May 6 from 4:30 - 8 p.m. It will be exactly 100 years to that day when the city of Greenwood formally took over operation of a library with a budget of $150 per year.

The current library location, in the rear portion of the City Hall building on Main Street, has also been the library's home since 1935. It was expanded by 420 square feet in 1980 to make more space for a children's area, but otherwise has occupied the same area since the City Hall was build 78 years ago.

According to a history of the library posted on the Website, the library in Greenwood actually dates back to the 1880's, when the Women's Christian Temperance Society started a circulating library. It was housed in a drug store, a bank, a post office and a church at various time. It found a more permanent home and operational structure when the city took over its operation a century ago.

The library has had nine director over the years. Kim Metzke is the current director. She succeeded Pat Braun, who was director since 1989.
