Barnes, Robert J., Rev. (10 DEC 1883 - 7 AUG 1964)

Funeral services were conducted Monday, 2 p.m. at the Koepel Funeral Home, Hayward, for the Rev. Robert James Barnes, pastor emeritus of the First Congregational Church, Hayward. Rev. Barnes died at his Hayward home Friday.

Born Dec. 10, 1883 in Milwaukee, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and his master's degree from the Chicago Theological Seminary. He was ordained in Pilgrim Congregational Church, Milwaukee, in 1905. Before coming to Hayward in 1911, he served First Congregational Harvey, N.D. He retired from active ministry at Hayward in 1956 and soon after was made pastor emeritus of the church he had served for over 45 years.

Surviving are his wife, Frances; three sons, Phillip of Hayward, Judson of Abbotsford, and James of Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. Sally Bunkelman of Abbotsford, and three grandsons, Richard, Roger and Larry. A son, Nixon, preceded him in death in 1963.

Cremation took place Tuesday at Forest Lawn Memorial, St. Paul. The remains will be removed to Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, for interment in the family plot.
