The frame cheese factor of
Christ Stephenson, 1 1/2 miles south of Curtiss (Clark Co., Wis.) at the Green
Grove corner, was destroyed shortly before midnight last Thursday by fire of
uncertain origin.
Neighbors were summoned, but the fire had already
gained such headway that they were unable to check the blaze but succeeded in
saving a truck load of cheese from the burning building.
The Stephenson
factory, believed to have been the first plant erected in the Green Grove
community, was built by Wm. Laabs, pioneer Clark County cheesemaker, nearly 50
years ago. Mr. Laabs later operated a factory northwest of Greenwood and at
present resides in Oshkosh.
