Southard, William
(? about 1878 – ? SEP 1932)
Fred Schlinsog, 38 and Wm. Southard, 54, were killed near Neillsville Saturday
evening at about 9:30 when they were struck by the auto of Elmo Barton who was
returning to his home in Neillsville after spending the weekend with his parents
on their farm south of Greenwood.
Barton, blinded by the lights of an approaching car, did not see the two men,
who were walking along the road with a third companion, Warren Southard.
The latter stepped of the concrete as the Barton car approached.
Southard was instantly killed by the impact, both legs, his collar bone being
broken and his head being badly cut.
Schlinsog, who suffered a fractured skull, a broken neck and a compound leg
fracture, died at the Neillsville hospital about two hours after the crash.
Barton’s car was badly damaged and Mrs. Barton, who was with him, was
slightly bruised.
Schlinsog and Southard were both single men and were on their way home from work
on the Puttkamer farm north of Neillsville.
Southard was a Spanish War veteran and leaves one brother and three sisters. Schlinsog was brother of Wm. Schlinsog, chairman of the Town of Mead and leaves four brothers and five sisters.
