Carl E. Gerold, 101, Englewood, Fla. And Willard,
died on Sunday, June 6, 2013. A celebration of life service will be held at
United Church of Christ, 515 W. 2nd St., Neillsville, at 2 p.m., on Friday, June
14. Inurnment will follow in the Neillsville City Cemetery.
Carl Gerold
was born on Aug. 9, 1911, in Milwaukee, to Arthur and Pauline (nee
Steigerberger) Gerold. He attended public schools in Milwaukee, Fredonia and
Random Lake, and graduated from Random Lake High School in 1919. He then
attended undergraduate school at UW Law School in 1936. He then began the
general practice of Law in Port Washington for the next 40 years, mostly with
the law firm of Gerold & Huriras, of which he was the founding partner. On Dec.
18, 1937, he married Mary Ketel, in Ladysmith. They enjoyed 69 years of
marriage. In October 1943, Carl joined the Navy as an Lt.jg and served 28 months
as executive officer aboard an LST in the Pacific Theatre. After returning from
service, he became an active member of the Port Washington community, belonging
to a number of organizations including Rotary, Barbershoppers, Ozaukee Lodge
#17, UCC, and serving on the school board which in the mid 1960s. Carl and Mary
built the then modern nursing home, Heritage, which continues to operate today.
Upon retirement in 1975, he abnd Mary split their time with winters in
Englewoon, Fla., and summers at Rock Dam near Willard. In Englewood, he was a
member or Rotary, Elks, VFW, Community Presbyterian Church, Sunnybrook Alliance
Church and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Fishing was his great love,
The ship has left port and has sailed into the sunset.
He is survived by
one son, John (Geri) Gerold, Madison; one daughter Paula (Robert) Schreiner,
Lake Mills, Iowa; six grandchildren, Mark (Holly) Schreiner, Mary (Charles)
Anderson, David Gerold, Lisa (Geovanny) Sarmiento, and Amy (Steve) Carpenter;
and seven great-grandchildren, Drew and Alex Anderson, Nathan and Joey
Schreiner, Zach and Finn Carpenter, and Zolia and Vivianna Sarmiento.
He
was preceded iin death by his wife, Mary; and one granddaughter, Denise
Schreiner.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the United Church
of Christ, American Legion Post #238, Greenwood, or any organization of your
choice.
