Carter, Hubert Lee (21 July 1896 - 23 November
1969)
Hubert Lee Carter, 73, of Neillsville, died Sunday at a hospital in
Wisconsin Rapids. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. from the Georgas
Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Dushek officiating. Burial was made in the
Neillsville City Cemetery.
Mr. Carter was born July 21, 1896, to Eddie
and Linnie (Savage) Carter in Clark County, where he received his education. He
was married in Neillsville January 17, 1920*, to Bernice Irish, who survives.
(*Cemetery record shows a marriage date of October 23, 1920).
He worked
on the farm for a short time and then was employed as an auto mechanic. He
worked here and in La Crose until 1949. Mr. and Mrs. Carter operated the first
state group home for girls. They retired and came to Neillsville in 1962. He
served in the army from August 14, 1918 to December 31, 1919.
Besides his
wife, Bernice, he is survived by a sister, Lullabel Prochazka of Neillsville.
