Hommell/Babb, Mary Ann
(13 AUG 1825 - 22 JAN 1913)
Mary Ann Weber was born in Wurttemberg,
Germany on Aug. 13, 1825. She came to America in 1849, settling first in New
York, where about two years later she was married to John M. Hommell.
To
them were born five children, John William, now of Neillsville; Chas. Henry, who
died in White Pigeon, Mich. in 1908; Mary A. Warner, Greenwood; George,
Watertown, S.D.; Edward, Castle Rock, Washington.
After the birth of the
first two, the family removed to Wisconsin, settling in West Salem where the
last children were born, and where they remained until 1867, when they came to
Clark County, living her continually until death claimed them.
The
husband, John Hommell, died in the town of Eaton in 1868. Some years later the
widow married Moses Babb, who passed away at Greenwood in 1895.
Since the
death of Mr. Babb the deceased had made her home with her only daughter, Mrs.
Mary Warner, at Greenwood, where she passed away Jan. 22, 1913.
Mrs. Babb
in earlier years was was a member of the Lutheran Church, but united with the
Presbyterian Church of Greenwood more than twenty years ago.
Although
blind for many years, the deceased was, until recent years, an active, cheerful
woman of strong mental and moral character; a devoted mother, good neighbor,
true friend with ready sympathy for all in time of need.
During the last
years of failing health, the devotion of her daughter and family was a source of
great comfort to her, and every care that could be bestowed has been supplied,
every wish that could be gratified has been granted, and almost her last words
were those of appreciation.
Besides the four surviving children there is
an aged half-sister, nine years her junior, at Long Island, N.Y., also sixteen
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren
