Apfel, Sgt. Richard A. (Military Notes - 1970)
Sgt. Richard A. Apfel,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Apfel, Rt. 2 Neillsville, received the Army
Commendation Medal during ceremonies near Cu Chi, Vietnam February 1. Presenting
the award was Major Igor D. Gerhardt. Sgt. Apfel earned the award for
meritorious service as an operations noncommissioned officer in Headquarters,
25th Infantry Division. He entered the Army in August 1968, completed basic
training at Ft. Campbell, Ky., and arrived overseas in August 1969. A 1965
graduate of Neillsville High School, the 22-year-old sergeant also attended the
Wisconsin State Universities at Platteville and Eau Claire.
