Joyce E. Mead, 81, San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Titusville,
Fla., and Loyal, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Vitas Hospice Home in San
Antonio. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Monday, July 15, at Cuddie
Funeral Home, Loyal. Rev. Rob Love officiated. Burial followed in the Loyal
Cemetery.
Joyce Elaine Lavandowska was born on Oct. 22, 1931, in Clark
County, the daughter of Helmuth and Vera (nee Rollins) Lavandowska. She was
raised on the family farm and received her education in the Loyal area,
graduating from Loyal High School in 1949.
Joyce married James Mead on
June 22, 1950. They farmed in Clark County for a few years before moving to
Miami, Fla., where she worked as a bookkeeper. After moving to central Florida,
Joyce trucked with her husband for a few years. They later divorced. She lived
in Titusville, Fla., for many years and worked at Wal-Mart for more than 25
years, where she met Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. After retiring, Joyce
continued to live in Titusville, where she was active in her church and enjoyed
her friends. She later moved to San Antonio to be closer to her daughter, Lisa.
She will be dearly missed by her three children, Lynda (John) Kimbrough,
Kennewick, Wash., John (Vivian) Mead, Rockmart, Ga., and Lisa (Greg) Stai, San
Antonio, Texas; three grandsons, Bryan Davis, Gary Mead and Michael Mead; and
two great-granddaughters, Ashlee Davis and Crysten Davis.
She was
preceded in death by her parents and one brother, LeRoy Lavandowska.
