Schraufnagel, Owen (5 DEC 1934 - 14 JUL 2013)

Owen Schraufnagel, 78, passed away surrounded by family in his home in Abbotsford on July 14, 2013.

Owen was born in Abbotsford on December 5, 1934, to Elmer and Margaret Schraufnagel who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Grace Hood Mohns Schraufnagel; three step sons, Reynold (Peggy) Mohns, Edwin Mohns and David Rothamer; grandchildren, April (Brian) Lehrman and Brandon Mohns; great grandchildren, Chase and Courtney Lehrman.

He is also survived by his two brothers and five sisters, Allen (Nancy) Schraufnagel of Portage, Gayle Thomas of Dorchester, Beth (Lawrence) Bargander of Edgar, Noel (Darlene) Schraufnagel of Columbus, Ga., Karin (Robert) Hoffmann of Abbotsford, Linda Graham of Waunakee, and Trudee (Gus) Smith of Waynesboro, Va., along with many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by George Thomas.

Owen is a graduate of Abbotsford High School, class of 1952. He successfully competed in football, basketball and baseball. However, he excelled in baseball and signed a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and played in their farm system for a time. Owen enjoyed fishing with family and friends, and also was an accomplished bowler and competed in several leagues.

He returned to Abbotsford and continued his employment with Afkend’s (7 years) and later with Kramer’s IGA (33 years) where he served as a produce manager and retired in 1993. Owen married Grace in 1970 and happily lived out the rest of his life in Abbotsford.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Abbotsford on Saturday, August 3, 2013. Visitation is at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at noon.
