FIRE LEVELS BARN ON RAY PETKE FARM
Fire of
undetermined origin leveled the 36 x 80 foot barn on the Ray Petke farm early
Thursday morning.
Members of the Owen Community Fire Company were alerted
at 12:20 a.m. and made the 7 ½ mile run in the Town of Hoard in sub-zero
weather. High velocity winds from the southwest fanned the blaze that leveled
the barn by the time the fire company arrived along with a one-stall garage and
the milk house. The fire company stood by in sub-zero temperatures watching the
nearby home which was threatened by sparks.
Earlier in the week, Petke
had sold off his livestock, but eight to 10 tons of hay in addition to some
straw and grain were lost in the blaze, plus milking equipment and a new tractor
parked in the garage.
