1897 Clark County Jail Museum (July
Meeting - 2 July 2013)
Officers of the 1897 Jail Museum met Tuesday, July
2, for the monthly report to the members. Following the secretary and
treasurer’s reports, president Stephen Roberts asked for volunteer to fill in
the calendar for days we do not yet have full coverage. More docents are needed
because we are open on the Fourth of July and Labor Day, as well as the Saturday
of the heritage Days weekend. The Museum will be open and free to the public
(with no tours) on “Old Picture Day” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 13,
2013.
Large numbers of “Images of Clark County” books have been sold at
the Dairy Breakfast, the Clark County Historical Society summer meeting in Colby
and the meeting of the Red Hat Society. A book signing will be held at Schuster
Park during Heritage Days at 3:50 p.m. Another book signing will be held at the
Thirsty Bookworm from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 14. The Museum will be
open Sunday for tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will also have a booth at the
Clark County Fair in August to promote the book, as well as Museum membership
and volunteer opportunities.
Leaks identified over the winter and spring
have been take care of over the front porch, the back porch and the kitchen, as
well as issues with some loose brick on the north wall requiring tuck-pointing.
The museum has received recent donations of a mailing label stamping
machine from the United Methodist Church thanks to Jerry Smith, papers from the
estate of Bob Lulloff thanks to Anita Lulloff and photos of the Pine Valley Zion
Lutheran Church from Joan Wavrunek. We are starting to use standard museum
software for recording accessions.
We reviewed information from the
recent Chippewa Valley Tech College classes on using e-mail, Facebook, etc. to
build public image and publicize businesses and non-profit groups. Museum
administrator Natalie Erpenbach has already brought The 1897 Jail Museum into
the 21st century by building our website and two Facebook accounts to publicize
events and update the community on what is happening at the Jail Museum.
Our next membership meeting is open to the public as always, will be held at 7
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Museum at 215 East Fifth Street in Neillsville.
Call any of the officers or the Museum office (715-743-2150) if you’d like to
help out, if you’d like a tour or if you’d like to do some research on local
history or families. Further information is available at the Museum’s website
(www.1897clarkcountyjailmuseum.com) and Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/1897CCJM).
