Albin Edwin Hornung, age 89,
former Marathon resident, passed away on August 4, 2013 at Cedar Ridge Elder
Services in Schofield.
He was born December 4, 1923, in the town of
Marathon to the late Peter and Mary (Murr) Hornung. He was united in marriage to
Mary Ann Knoeck on October 21, 1950. She survives.
Albin farmed in the
town of Marathon, and later on raised ginseng on the original homestead settled
in the 1850's by his great grandfather. Prior to farming, he went to Marathon
County Normal School and worked as a teacher for a short time. Albin was an avid
reader with a love for history. He enjoyed playing cards, and loved working his
land both in Marathon and the town of Mosinee. After a devastating tornado in
1977, Albin began work at the Milco Division of Wausau Metals Corporation. His
greatest joy was his children and time spent with his grandchildren. He will
always be remembered as a hard working and fun loving father who valued
education, his faith, and above all, his family. He was a life-long member of
St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon.
Survivors besides his wife, Mary Ann,
include three daughters; Verna (Richard) Toftum of Amherst, Marjorie (Dr. Ron)
Charipar of Ladysmith, and Irene Haas of Colby; one son, James (Linda) Hornung
of Marathon; twelve grandchildren; Sarah (Aaron) Kramer of Prairie du Chien,
Michael Toftum of Stevens Point, Dr. Elizabeth (Dr. Allen) Lee of Burlington,
Vermont, Matthew Charipar (fiancée Kate) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kristin
Charipar of Boulder, Colorado, Ryan (Heidi) Haas of Chicago, Illinois, Katie
(Mark) Clark of Phoenix, Arizona, Renee Haas of Baltimore, Maryland, Erin Haas
(fiancé Chris) of Providence, Rhode Island, and Sasha Hornung, Hannah Hornung,
and Alex Hornung of Marathon; four great-grandchildren; Kylie, Emily and Carson
Kramer, and Finley Haas. He is further survived by a sister, Joan Boehm of
Wausau, brothers-in-law, Rudy Lang, Marvin Knoeck, Gordon (Ann) Knoeck, and many
nieces and nephews.
Albin was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry,
George (Katherine), John (Verlie), and Peter Hornung, and ten sisters, Mary
(Anton) Knauf, Rose (Ludwig) Martin, Hilda (Bill) Printz, Adeline (John)
Michaud, Helen (Leonard) Kummerow, Gertrude (Rudy) Lang, Florence (Ray) Kage,
