Columbia (Area Fire - 7 May 1970)
A ravishing forest fire fanned by a
strong south wind devastated about 160 acres of valuable forest lands last week
Monday afternoon. Starting in the Town of Dewhurst it quickly jumped the road
west of Babcock’s Hill and on into Hewett where it rapidly advanced. Fire
fighters and equipment from Fairchild, Black River Falls and Tomah finally
brought the fire under control. A low flying plane using chemicals assisted in
the fight.
No fire permits will be issued in this are until further
notice from our district forest ranger at Black River Falls.
