Root, George A. (21 JUN 1849 – 19
MAR 1916)
George A. Root died at his home in the town of York at 10:40
p.m., Sunday, March 19, 1916. He had been seriously ill only a few days, but his
health has been gradually failing for several years. Deceased was born at
Forest, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, June 21, 1849, and there he grew to
manhood, attending school, and helping his father clear up a farm. In the year
1878 he came to Clark County and settled on a farm in the town of York where he
lived until his death. On July 3rd, 1878, he was married to Emma F. Gibson at
Lamartine, Wis. Six children were born to them, five of whom are living: Mrs.
Chloe Griffith of Oshkosh, Elwin, Lewis and Allie at home, and Ross, who has a
position at Westby, Wis. A daughter, Elsie, died in infancy. Beside the
sorrowing widow and children, he leaves two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs.
Martha Patrick and Mrs. Amelia Ward, both of Fond du Lac, and three brothers,
Sylvester living near Neillsville, Frank of Fond du Lac and Loren of Indiana.
The funeral was held Wednesday at the M.E. Church at York Center, of which
church he had been a faithful member for the past thirty-eight years. Rev.
Powell officiated.
Those who came from away to attend the funeral were
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Root and Mrs. Amelia Ward of Fond du Lac, Mr. and Mrs. Homer
Benedict of Lamartine and Mrs. J.H. Griffith and son of Oshkosh.
