Matthews, Leon (27 August 1914 -
29 June 1970)
Funeral services for Leon Matthews, 55, of Lake Geneva,
who died June 29 at the Veterans Hospital in Madison after a long illness, were
held July 2 at 2 p.m. from the Como Community Church, with the Rev. Wallace
Christen officiating. Burial was made in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lake Geneva.
Mr. Matthews lived in this area for about four years.
Mr. Matthews was
born August 27, 1914 in Lake Geneva. He married Lois Christensen (Poler) on
September 19, 1939, in Woodstock, Ill. He was employed as the machinist for
Modine Manufacturing Company in Ringwood, Ill. He was a Veteran of World War II,
serving with the Engineer Corps of 82nd Division in the Burma Theater. He was
also a member of the Como Community Church, the Loyal Order of Moose, Local 192
of Elkhorn, American Legion, Frank Kresen Post, No. 24 of Lake Geneva.
Survivors include: his wife; a daughter, Sara Jo, at home; three sisters and a
brother.
People attending from out-of-town included: Mr. and Mrs. William
Poler, who is a son-ion-law, and Mrs. Ardis Backhaus, a sister-in-law..
